  Historical Background

Barangay Panagaan

Blessed with agricultural lands and thick forests, Barangay “Panagaan” was first inhabited by the natives- The “Subanen." Because of the natural resources and beautiful sceneries of the place, Visayan people from Tangub, Ozamiz, Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental, and mostly from Cebu, wanted to settle in the place and traded with the Subanen people by means of barter commonly known a “Gratis”.

From then on, Visayans traded-in salted fish, salt, sugar, clothes in lieu of the parcel of agricultural land from the Subano occupants. That is the reason as to why our community was named after the term “Pinangga” which means, “Giving and Sharing”.

The first Visayan settlers in Panagaan said that Panagaan was under the Municipality of Molave which was separated from the Municipality of Aurora on the year 1956 under the regimen of first Mayor Javier Ariosa. Meanwhile, in the year 1960, President Carlos P. Garcia signed and issued Executive Order No. 393 stating “Mahayag” as an independent municipality. Barangay Panagaan which was once under the municipality of Molave, became part of the Municipality of Mahayag.

The first market day of Barangay Panagaan was on January 30, 1950 and until the present time, we commemorate the “Araw ng Barangay” on every 30th of January.
