The group has conducted two activities for this day. The Barangay Leaders’ Assembly and Proper Hand Washing Seminar for the High School students of Panagaan National High School; wherein the tasks are delegated to all members under the instructions per Program Director.

The Barangay Leaders’ Assembly was conducted in order to disseminate and introduce to the Barangay leaders and other officials regarding the one month activity to be conducted by the group, and their role and involvement in each activity. In addition, calendars were distributed to specific leaders in order to enhance the information dissemination regarding the activities to other community people.

Community General Assembly

March 21, 2014

The Community General Assembly is one of our major activities for this exposure based on our Comprehensive Health Plan. It was conducted at the Barangay Basketball Court, with a theme of, “P.O.W.E.R UP PANAGAAN 2016: Para sa Paglambo sa atong Pinanggang Barangay”. Our goal for this activity was: 1. to increase the awareness of the community people on P.O.W.E.R UP Pangaan, and 2. secure participation among the community people on the implementation of P.O.W.E.R UP Panagaan. The registration started at 8:00am, with a simultaneous interpurok blood pressure taking to determine and classify the residents according to their blood pressure. The activity was attended by a total of 118 individuals from puroks one to five, including the barangay officials, purok leaders, barangay health workers and various organization leaders such as the senior citizen and parish youth apostolate . The presentation highlighted two major topics: 1. importance of P.O.W.E.R UP Panagaan and ranger formation, and 2. our full month’s plan of activities.  An open forum and early registration for various activities was also conducted at the end of every topic, to determine whether the plans or activities are socially acceptable, attainable and appropriate.

The activity not only featured the essence of our plan, but more importantly it showed the willingness and cooperation among the community residents. Through the support of the barangay leaders, the student didn’t find it difficult in inviting the community residents and preparing the venue for the event. The community residents, specifically the civilian volunteer officers and councilors, aided the students in the installation of covering for the basketball court and preparation of the sound system, chairs and tables. Knowing that our budget was limited due to lack of sponsorship, this didn’t hinder the community residents in attending the event and they even sponsored the snacks for the activity. Through these actions of volunteerism and active participation, the principle of unity and strong partnership is evident between the medical students and community residents.

Courtesy Call at the Sangguniang Bayan
March 17, 2014

As part of our courtesy call today, we attended the Municipal Flag Ceremony together with our community preceptor, Municipal Mayor, Vice-Mayor, Councilors and staff. We were then individually introduced to the officials and staff, with emphasis on our goals, objectives and length of stay. We were tasked to present our Vision, Mission and Comprehensive Health Plan to the Municipal Council presided by the Municipal Vice-Mayor. Our presentation featured our plan entitled P.O.W.E.R UP PANAGAAN 2016, which stands forPrevention and Control of Hypertension, tOilet Sanitation, Water Potability,Environmental Sanitation and Right to Health. The presentation highlighted the importance of establishing linkage between the medical students and municipal officials as partners for the overall success of the health plan. This activity also served as an avenue to develop the communication and interpersonal skills of the medical students in building their character as future community doctors. This activity marked as the starting point of several presentations that the students need to engage in order to strengthen and secure the sustainability of their community projects. The group perceives that the activity was a success, because the officials not only had an increased awareness of the existing problems but more importantly they’ve realized their roles and importance in paving ways toward a healthier Panagaan and Municipal.

After the presentation, the group started their first hospital duty for 24 hours as a form of preparation for their clerkship for the incoming school year. The hospital duty aims to develop and further enhance the students’ history taking, physical examination and management skills for the patient.

ÖTwo members of the group went to the Panagaan National High School to facilitate the activity on BASURART with the theme, “Making a TRASHformation.” This activity is divided into 2 parts and the first part was held today. With the assistance and support from the institution, we were able to obtain the participation of the HS students. The 12 participants were composed of the school government officers as well as random students in the campus. By upholding one of the DepEd Core Values which is Makalikasan, the contest serves as the advocacy to practice recycling in the school.

Ö The first part of the activity is focused on orientation regarding BasurArt andTrash hunting by the participants.

In addition with this, two (2) from our group – Honey Nina Cabreros and May Kris Coros, had their 24-hour duty at the Mahayag Municipal Hospital.

The activities we’ve done and accomplished for this day was challenging yet fulfilling at the same time. Although the group had problems in terms of manpower, but in the end, we were able to overcome it with the cooperation and teamwork of the group. It only shows that at times of adversities, we will always find comfort and support from each other.

Today, the group had our activity related to the top problem in the community which is improper solid waste management. The Team Pangga as well as some representatives from the Parish Youth  Apostolates went to the Panagaaan National High School at around 8 am to facilitate the BASURART activity with the theme “Making a TRASHformation.” Our goal is to increase awareness, educate and allow the participants to apply the knowledge and skills on recycling and reusing waste. Previously, the participants had their Trash Hunting wherein they were provided with plastic bags to collect recyclable, recycled or reused materials to be utilized in making an art piece the following day. The students, carrying their trash bags filled with recyclables such as cans, old newspapers, plastic cups, bottles, straws, ribbons, CDs, etc., were really excited for this contest.

The program started with a prayer and singing of Pambansang Awit led by Edward Ariel Tadea and Fatimatu Mahmour Qassim respectively. While the other group members were facilitating the BASURART activity, others were taking the blood pressure and provided health education to the teachers in the school. The participants were comprised of Student Government officers and non-officers coming from different levels. They were provided with art materials such as pair of scissors, glue, scotch tape, glue gun, glue sticks, paint and paint brushes. They were to finish their art work in 2.5 hours. Their creation should be anything that can be useful at home, school, and environment or that conveys the 3Rs message (Reuse, Recycle, Reduce). The project director also presented beforehand the meaning of recycling, and its benefits to the environment, public health and economy. It was observed that the students absorbed the message that what we were trying to inculcate in their minds, that as young as they are, they can make a big change in their community and one way is by practicing the solid waste management properly. In this way, we are making them our active partners is maintaining the environmental health of Barangay Panagaan.

The judging was done by 3 school teachers selected by the project director. The group’s representative gave a brief description of their artwork, stating the specific recyclables used, and why they chose the concept of their work. The art piece is judged on the basis of the use of recyclable materials, creativity, originality and integration. Some students also had the opportunity to showcase their talents through dancing and singing. There were 3 winners in the contest and a consolation prize was also given to those who did not make it. The activity ended with a group pictorial with the participants.

Red & White Rangers' Assembly

Sustainability of each and every project is one of the paramount priorities of our team. In connection with that, formulation of Core Group is a necessity. Since there is an existing committee on Health, it was easier for us to select members from it. And fortunately, there was one volunteer.

The goals for the said activity includes: first, to increase the knowledge of each ranger regarding their roles and responsibilities. For the Red Rangers,H.E.A.R.T. which stands for House-to-House, Educate, Active Model, Record and Report, Train. For the White Rangers, it is C.U.R.E. which stands for C,Utilize herbal medicines, Record and Refer, Educate. Second, is to enhance the leadership skills of the member through team building. They were given newspaper and task to dress up one of the member as to what a ranger look to them. The team eventually came up with a Ranger clad in long sleeves, carrying blood pressure apparatus with stethoscope. They presented it via role play. They perceived ranger as someone who can cater basic needs of the people like taking Blood Pressure correctly and accurately and can give health teachings on the preventive aspect of Hypertension and Acute Respiratory Infections. Last but not the least, is to secure partnership by oath taking with the barangay captain as the presiding officer.

Bantay Presyon Training Workshop

March 26, 2014

Right after the assembly, a workshop on BP taking was held. The group presented a short but brief lecture on Hypertension which served as an introduction, Pamphlets were distributed, and then followed by a Step – by – Step procedure on how to take Blood Pressure. It was simultaneously flashed on the projector and two medical students demonstrated it in front.

The rangers were divided into two groups and given the time to practice amongst themselves. Medical students were there to guide them and to answer their questions or clarifications. There were 13 members who attended and 2 of them were male. We were so pleased to see how cooperative the team was, how eager they seemed, how excited when it was their turn to practice. It made us realized that the community people is really accepting us without hesitation, just imagine this, we, the medical students are teaching them. The earnestness in their actions tells us that they really wanted to learn from the said workshop, that they are willing to help and be part for the change we want to happen. A return demonstration was done and evaluated by a medical student utilizing a checklist. The members took it seriously that they even feigned some lines or scripts, it is as if they were having a real patient interaction. Majority of them got it right, which makes all of our hard works paid off. We culminated the workshop with distribution of Certificate of Participation.  Kudos to all Red and White Rangers.
